Medium-Density Fiberboards are a popular option that people love to add to their place. The main reason for choosing them as the interior section of the house is that they are durable, and you can choose their color as per your own choices.

If you decide to use the mdf after the complete installation process, things will become far simpler. Now we will look at the common steps to install the mdf skirting board perfectly.

Step 1: Gather All Materials

At the initial stage, you need to arrange all the materials that will help install the boards. If the steps are taken carefully, then choosing the right pair of boards will become easy and simple.

  • Cutting of the MDF skirting boards
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Adhesive
  • Adhesive gun
  • Spirit level
  • Hammer or nail gun
  • Paintbrush or roller

Step 2: Prepare The Walls

Ensure the walls are clean, dry, and free from any debris. Use a scraper or sandpaper to remove any protrusions or rough areas. If the walls have been freshly plastered, allow them to fully dry and cure before proceeding.

It’s recommended to paint or wallpaper the walls before installing the skirting boards to avoid any accidental damage or extra effort later.

Step 3: Measure And Cut The Skirting Boards

Measure the length of each wall where mdf skirting board will be installed. Add a few extra centimeters to account for any mistakes or irregularities. Use a tape measure and pencil to mark the measurements on the MDF skirting boards.

For internal corners, use a miter saw to cut the boards at a 45-degree angle. For external corners, cut the boards at a 45-degree angle in the opposite direction. Make sure to label each piece to keep track of its intended positions.

Step 4: Apply Adhesive And Fix The Skirting Boards

Apply a bead of adhesive along the back of the first skirting board, ensuring you have sufficient coverage. Position the board against the wall, aligning it with the floor, and press firmly to secure it.

Use a spirit level to check for vertical alignment and make any adjustments if necessary. For longer lengths, apply adhesive in sections to prevent it from drying out before installation.

Step 5: Fill Gaps And Sand The Boards

Inspect the joints and corners for any visible gaps or unevenness. Use a suitable filler or caulk to fill any gaps, ensuring a smooth and seamless finish. Allow the filler to dry completely before proceeding.

Once dry, use fine-grit sandpaper to gently to clean skirting boards, removing any rough edges or imperfections. Wipe away any dust with a clean cloth or vacuum cleaner.

Step 6: Finish and Paint

You can prime and paint the skirting boards to match your interior decor. Apply a suitable primer to seal the MDF surface and enhance paint adhesion.

Once the primer is dry, apply the desired paint color using a brush or roller. Allow sufficient drying time between coats as recommended by the paint manufacturer. Ensure you paint the skirting boards before fixing them.
